Picker Jock

Old Langholm Characters

From “Langholm As It Was” by John Hyslop

According to John Hyslop in his book ‘Langholm As It Was’ published in 1912 there was no shortage of characters in Langholm of old.

One such eccentric - Picker Jock - was known to him personally because of his peculiar behaviour in the Kirk every Sunday.

He recounts that just under the pulpit sat Picker Jock, who seemingly had no other name, claimed he lost his health "in the year 1,” that is 1801.

Though an unbelieving and unsympathetic public attributed his many failings, not as he himself did to “an all wise Providence,” but to laziness, deliberately contrived and scrupulously respected.
